What Dental Services Fall Under Cosmetic Dentistry?

| October 30, 2008
by Amy Nutt

Cosmetic dentistry, although still very focused on all around oral care and well being, revolves around practices and procedures that have a pleasing appearance as the ultimate goal.

A cosmetic dentist can attack and usually repair all of the issues that make a patient feel uncomfortable about the current state of their smile.

Some of the normal procedures that would fall under the category of cosmetic dentistry are as follows:

Removing and Replacing Dark Metallic Fillings

Though some dentists today no longer use the metallic filler to repair cavities, there are thousands and thousands of people walking around with them and many of those people are a bit uncomfortable with the appearance of their teeth because of them.

There isn’t anything necessarily wrong with the old style metallic fillings, in fact they serve the purpose of repairing a damaged tooth very well, they just happen to be a fairly unattractive way of repairing the problem.

A cosmetic dentist can easily remove the old, unsightly metallic filling and repair the cavity with a tooth colored bonding that will be un-noticeable even at a relatively close distance. The problem will be fixed just the same as it were with the metallic filling, but it will be done in a way that will keep the patients smile as attractive as possible.

Straightening Crooked Teeth

Crooked teeth can, at times, be the cause of some discomfort to some patients, but even if there is no physical discomfort a crooked tooth will always detract from the smiles beauty. Today’s cosmetic dentists have more options available to repair this problem that just painful metal braces.

There are options available today like invisible, removable aligners that will rectify the problem of a crooked smile with no pain to the patient at all. This incredible innovation is a huge positive for anyone who is looking to repair a potentially big dental issue, but who doesn’t want to deal with the pain or the embarrassment of having it done with bulky metal braces.

Stains

Cigarette smokers, coffee drinkers and tea drinkers can all suffer from dark stains that make their smile unattractive. A good cosmetic dentist can easily and painlessly eliminate this unsightly problem and most likely recommend a good over the counter product that will help keep it under control between regular dental visits.

Spaces between Teeth or Missing Teeth

Gaps between the teeth, whether they stem from an unaligned smile or from missing teeth can totally ruin an otherwise beautiful smile. A qualified cosmetic dentist will be able to fill the small gaps seamlessly with invisible aligners or create a custom plate to fill the holes left by missing teeth to create a perfectly beautiful and natural smile.

For many people, a smile is a big part of the first impression. Many people are too embarrassed or insecure about the problems that exist with their teeth and they become shy or withdrawn in social situations, for those people, cosmetic dentistry can solve many of the problems that they face on a daily basis in dealing with others. A good cosmetic dentist can fix virtually all of the problems associated with general dentistry, but will do so in a fashion that helps perfect your smile at the same time.

Regardless of the issue that you have with your smile, a good cosmetic dentist will likely be able to fix it relatively quickly and painlessly. If problems with your smile are holding you back in social situations, and you have the money to fix them, a cosmetic dentist could certainly be the answer to your problem.

To prevent kidney stones, you need to drink at least enough water to produce two quarts of urine in twenty-four hours. Cranberry juice however, is an ineffectual kidney stone cure. Cranberry juice does prevent a urinary tract infection but it is a fallacy that it also prevents kidney stones. Lemonade however, in addition with water is an excellent kidney stone cure. The citric acid in the lemonade inhibits kidney stone formation. Thus the drink is good for a kidney stone cure. Drinking two glasses of lemonade a day along with regular water intake reduces the risk of a subsequent kidney stone infection to about 5 percent.

Calcium oxalate is one of the minerals found in the kidney stones. It is a good idea to stop having food which is rich in this mineral if you suffer from kidney stone. Learning About Rheumatoid Arthritis

| October 22, 2008
by Bill Parker

Rheumatoid Arthritis is a disease whose symptoms include chronic inflammation or swelling of the joints. In the long term, it can lead to joint damage, pain, stiffness and problems with mobility. Rheumatoid Arthritis is a chronic disease. That means that it may never go away. According to the Arthritis Foundation, it is also a systemic disease which means that Rheumatoid Arthritis can affect other systems or organs in your body. It is a very serious disease which needs early diagnosis and treatment in order to help you continue living as normally as possible.

The cause of Rheumatoid Arthritis is still unknown. What is known is that people with this disease have an abnormal immune system. People with Rheumatoid Arthritis have immune systems that think that healthy joint tissue is a foreign body and the person’s own immune system attacks the joint. It is still a disease that has no cure. Rheumatoid Arthritis is treated in ways designed to preserve mobility and reduce pain and inflammation.

Most people diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis first notice it in the joints of their hands and wrists, then later in larger joints of the body. It will equally affect both sides of the body. In more advanced cases of rheumatoid arthritis the tendons and bones are attacked, possibly leaving the person severely deformed and can make the joints unstable.

A small percentage of the population is affected by this disease. According to the Arthritis Foundation, about 70% of the victims of the disease are women who first experience symptoms between the ages of 30 to 50 years. Although not common, this disease can also occur in children affecting girls more often than boys.

Each case of rheumatoid arthritis is treated individually, since each case presents different challenges. Patients are given a host of medications, ones that slows down the rate of joint degeneration, painkillers, and anti-inflammatory drugs. Since some of these drugs are steroid based the patient may also be given medication to improve the functioning of their immune systems. Doctors also may prescribe therapy to improve the functioning of the joints as well as relieve pain and swelling.

Patients have a much better outcome when their arthritis is detected as early as possible. The sooner the patient starts taking medication the slower the arthritis will progress, meaning that they can carry on with their lives without dealing with pain and inflammation for many more years. Treatments have progressed over the years meaning that more than ever a person suffering from rheumatoid arthritis can lead a normal life.

Whiten Your Teeth the Safe Way

|
by Varian Sperks

Everyone wants to look and feel their best. Teeth whitening is a relatively new trend that is popular in the dentist’s chair and in the home.

Since about 1989, professional and home teeth whitening methods have increased in popularity. Medical and consumer health awareness groups have paid much attention to the safety and effectiveness of whitening products. These processes have received generally positive reports in both areas of effectiveness and consumer safety.

There are several issues that you should keep in mind when considering teeth whitening:

Concerns about the risks of bleaching agents have been raised in both medical and consumer communities. Some believe that these bleaching processes may cause certain cancers.

However, studies have demonstrated that the concentration of carbamide peroxide in teeth whitening does not cause any cancer in mouth tissue or gums. As a matter of fact, there is an agent in saliva that seems to offset the amount of peroxide given off by the teeth whitening agents.

Studies have been conducted to show whether or not bleaching agents will cause a tooth’s enamel to wear or become otherwise damaged. Medical experts have studied this area carefully and now claim that fruit juices and soft drinks cause more damage to tooth enamel than tooth whitening bleach.

Studies are underway to assess the affects of teeth whitening processes on nerve endings. These studies are still in the early stages, as the long-term effects are only present five to eight years after the whitening procedure. Despite concerns, checkups from five to eight years following tooth whitening have shown relatively little damage.

While it isn’t possible to have teeth whitening done if you have caps or crowns on your teeth it is possible to undergo the procedure if you have had simple fillings or root canal procedures. So far the dental histories have not shown any problems from this procedure, but studies are still in their infancy.

While the above mentioned studies are valid and accurate it is still best to consult with your dental health professional to decide your best course of action.

Every person’s dental history is unique, meaning that just because studies have supported teeth whitening in certain situations it may still be risky for you! Don’t take too much risk merely for appearance’s sake.
